History of the Faculty

The history of the Faculty of Science dates back to 26th September,1963, when the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was founded as a second Faculty of Medicine affiliated to Ankara University. In 1965, the School of Natural Sciences was founded and the Departments of Biology, Mathematics and Statistics established within that School.

On 4th July, 1967 the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences became Hacettepe University under law number 892, and as a result of the restructuring of Hacettepe as a University, the Faculty of Science was founded. By a decision of the Senate of Hacettepe University taken in January 1976, the Department of Biology was divided into the Departments of Botany, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Zoology. Later, under the Higher Education Law number 2547, the Faculty of Science was reorganized to include the Departments of Biology, Statistics and Mathematics, each of which was divided into Scientific Divisions for administative purposes..

In 1993 the Chemistry Department, formally a part of the Engineering Faculty, passed to the Faculty of Science. Also in 1993, three new Scientific Divisions of the Biology Department, Ecology, Biotechnology and Applied Biology, were added to the five previous Divisions. In 1994 two new Scientific Divisions within the Department of Chemistry, Theorical Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry, were established, and within the Statistics Department, the Divisions of Probability Theory and Probability Processes, Risk Analysis, and Statistical Information Systems, were formed. Later, in 2002, the Department of Actuary Sciences was founded, and the Actuary Sciences Division was transfered to that Department.
